Sugar-Free

Yesterday was Day 1 of No Sugar.

I know I say I’m cutting sugar at least once a month, but I NEEEEED to do it!

I’m taking it one day at a time.  I am totally addicted to sugar.  I let it boss me around.

Sugar is such a jerk.

Anyone else want to take on this challenge with me?

Getting it out of my system over the next couple of weeks will be the hardest part.  I can do it!  I’ve done it before.  I’ve gone a lot longer without sugar and felt A LOT better!

I’m thinking if I make it an actual “challenge” with a start and end date, I’ll mentally lock in.

So, here we go. Day Two.

Yesterday

I started the day with a 3 mile run and a 2 mile walk with the girls.

After getting everyone going around here, I headed out to Pilates.

I was craving some soup, so I hit up the store for some groceries and headed home.

I was going to make this soup using turkey kielbasa, but then remembered I had some ground turkey that needed to be cooked. So, then, I thought I would make the ground turkey into meatballs.  By the time, I got everything cleaned and chopped and ready, I was too hungry and said screw it and just browned the ground turkey!

Ground Turkey and Kale Soup

  • Baby carrots
  • Onion
  • Celery
  • Kale
  • Ground turkey
  • Gluten free noodles

Soften the onion, carrots and celery in a little olive oil.  Add raw ground turkey and cook completely.  Add some chicken stock and water until you have the desired amount of soup. Bring to a boil. Add a couple of bouillon cubes.  (I would have used all chicken stock if I had it, but this worked!).  Add gluten free noodles.  Once noodles are cooked, reduce heat to a simmer and add kale.  Cook until kale is tender.

**Edit: I forgot to mention once I added the liquid, I added a bay leaf and 3 or 4 sprigs of Thyme!

It was delicious.

The first day with no sugar went surprisingly well.  I had a faint headache for most of the afternoon and after my last meal I was wanting something sweet, but that’s about it.  I just drank extra water and stuck a piece of gum in my mouth after dinner.

I will survive this.

Pasta Carbonara

Yesterday started with a two mile walk with the girls.  If anyone needs training in power walking, my dogs can help you!

These two kept me moving at a 4 mph pace.  My hips and and buns were feeling it!

My plan was to lift weights, but I got busy doing stuff around the house (meaning I made a monster list of things I want to get done around the house) and one of our clients stayed home sick, so my morning and day kind of got away from me.

What I’m telling you is, I’ve got nothing to write about today!

There’s always food.

Meals

Meal #1: Egg whites with gluten free toast

Meal #2: No-bake cookies.

Meal #3: Left over Chinese Food (beef with broccoli)

We are running pretty low on groceries so I was trying to find something to make for dinner with what was on hand.  The Pasta Carbonara is almost gluten free because I used canadian bacon and I’m sure it’s not gluten free.  I loosely followed Pioneer Woman’s recipe.

Here’s what I did:

  • Brown rice angel hair pasta
  • 9 slices of Canadian bacon, chopped into little cubes
  • Frozen peas
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup of parmesan cheese
  • 3/4 cup of whole milk
  • lots of pepper

Boil the noodles per package,drain (with brown rice noodles you have to also rinse the pasta) and put back in the hot pot. While the noodles are cooking: Crisp up the canadian bacon and beat the eggs, cheese and milk.  While noodles are still super hot, slowly drizzle the egg mixture while stirring until noodles are coated.  Add canadian bacon and frozen peas, cover and let the leftover heat warm the peas up.

Like I said, the amount of egg/cheese/milk was way too much.  Pioneer Woman used larger noodles and made a bigger batch.  I used her measurements because I had never made it before, but I could have made a third of that and it would have been enough.

Super easy, delicious and comes together really fast.

Weird Words

I decided to take a little break from cardio yesterday morning.  I slept in a little later, blogged, and stalked people on Facebook.

After getting everyone around here up and on their way, I headed to a Pilates class.  It was wonderful, as usual.  My legs have been so sore the past couple of days.  While Pilates is challenging on the reformer, I always feel really stretched out and relaxed when its over.

On my way home from Pilates, I started thinking about a conversation Justin and I had the previous day.

The weirdest words.

Number one on my list is: BELCH.

Also, THONG.   A word that is used for something you wear on your feet as well as your fanny.

Another good one: Smorgasbord.  It makes me think of Charlottes Web.  You may think this is an old word and no one uses it anymore, but alas, there is one person….my Step-Mom! (haha, love you Mom!)  How did the Swedish word for buffet make it into OUR vocabulary?

The Answer is Laundry

Yesterday started with a three mile run and then a one mile walk with my two favorite girls.

As soon as I got home, I went straight downstairs and lifted some weights.

As soon as I was done, Justin headed out to play golf with his Dad and I got busy getting everyone ready for their day.

Once they were on their way, I grabbed some oats with protein.

I got busy on some laundry (what’s new?).  In fact, if you ever think, “I wonder what Stacy is doing right now?”  It’s laundry.  As I type this post, I am staring at folded laundry from yesterday that has to be put away.

Drat.

Isn’t it funny how we can take the simplest of household jobs and turn them into something despicable.

For example, I really don’t mind washing, drying and folding laundry, but I DESPISE putting it away! Really?  Like it’s the most horrendous job in life?

Or, I don’t mind loading and unloading the dishwasher, but if a cookie sheet needs to be hand washed, it may sit on the counter for a week.

Shame.

I whipped up some pancakes, to avoid putting laundry away, and topped them with natural peanut butter and honey.

For Lunch

I grilled those chicken sausages I talked about yesterday and roasted some green beans for the side (plain yellow mustard is in the little cup).

For the dreaded 3pm snack, I caved and ate some chips and cheese with salsa.

Dinner was a Hamburger Helper knock off.  I used gluten free noodles, ground beef, cream of mushroom soup and peas.

It was delicious!

I wrapped up the day with some quality TV (Pretty Woman) and was fast asleep by 9:30pm!

I better get back to my laundry.

KC Divas

I had a Fabulous Sunday! How about you?

I was up by 5am, ate some breakfast around 7am and by 9am I was in Mid-town at a group exercise class with the KC DIVAS!

Here is a little back story….

There are a group of girls in New York that all compete and call themselves the NY Divas.  A couple of the girls came to Kansas City and competed at the WBFF show in May. So, quite a few of us met them and, of course, became Facebook friends.

They get together weekly and workout and practice posing. A friend that, before Sunday, I only knew through Facebook came up with the idea to start a KC Divas with the same concept. We would get together for group workouts and posing practice.

The Greater Kansas City area is pretty big and spread out.  The girls that live South of KC get together every Saturday at 7am and run stairs and do track workouts at a high school close to them.  As you know, I have been getting together with girls close to me (which is North of KC), doing track workouts and running stairs.  So once or twice a month, we are all going to come together in the middle and workout as a group!

Yesterday was our first group workout and was so fun!  So much fun, that we are doing it again next Sunday only outdoors.

Back at home

The girls were anxiously awaiting my arrival.

So, I leashed them up and we headed out for a walk.

I was so hungry by the time we got back and fixed myself a warm bowl of brown rice noodles with roasted broccoli and meat sauce.

I was pretty sore and tired the rest of the day.  I tucked myself in and watched an Oprah: The Next Chapter marathon.  My favorite one was with Mr. Curtis “50Cent” Jackson.

Oh Fitty.

I snacked on some gluten free pretzels while watching TV.

For dinner, I had planned on eating Al Fresco’s Roasted Pepper and Asiago chicken sausages with roasted broccoli, but instead had chips with cheese and salsa.

Very similar meals, I can see how I did that swap.

We wrapped up the day with a little Big Brother.  Justin and I both decided we are going to go ahead and root for Frank.  At this point, he deserves to win!

400 Meter Lunges

Yesterday started at the track with a friend.

It took us an hour and was sooooo FUN!  I love doing lunges and it was so satisfying to know we did 400 meters of them.

Once I arrived home, I leashed up the girls and took them for a 2.5 mile walk.  They were thrilled and it gave my legs a chance to cool down.

For dinner, we met up with Justin’s family at an Italian restaurant, CafĂ© Italia.  We love that place.

I was really trying to steer clear of any gluten so I didn’t have any of the bread with oil and cheese.  Oh man, it was so hard. That stuff is GOOD!

Instead, I had the salmon and asparagus in a lemon butter sauce.

We ended the night over at Justin’s Dad’s house drinking wine and chatting.

This morning, I’m up and heading out to a bootcamp with some of my fellow competition girls.

Hot and Bothered

Good Morning, Friends!

Not a whole lot went on yesterday in the life of Stacy.

I ran 3.5 sweaty miles.  I came inside and alerted Justin, who was getting ready to leave for golf, that it was F#$%& hot outside and he was going to be miserable.

He was like, “Really? It’s supposed to be nice out today.”

Me, as I paced around drinking water and breathing heavy, “Nope. It SUCKS out there. It’s humid and HOT!”

He just snickered, “oommkay.” and continued his business of getting ready.  Clearly, not fostering my current state of agitation toward our climate and mother nature in general.

For some reason, my run left me hot and bothered.

I leashed up the girls in all my sweaty glory and took them for a one mile walk. By the time I got back, I was cooled off and let Justin know that it was, in fact, beautiful outside. And not at all humid.

He was like, “Thought so, there’s only like 20% humidity out there today.”

I don’t think I ran long or hard enough to get my endorphins flowing.

Big mistake. HUGE. (name that movie)

After getting everyone up and around the for day, I had planned on lifting weights, but had no energy.  I ended up reading a romance novel.

In other news

Sara has been itchy the past few weeks and her scratching and licking of herself was getting progressively worse.  I thought she just needed a bath, but after taking her, she was still scratching and licking all. night. long.

Poor Sara.

So, off to the vet we go.

I’m sorry you have to see how I allow myself to go out in public (I put on a bra and panties so Justin was proud).  Notice how you see less and less of me?!  After the first one, I was like BAH! why didn’t I put some mascara on? Or some anti-wrinkle cream. So, I was like, maybe just half my face. Nope. Okay, just Sara.

Any who, the good thing about animal doctors is that they really don’t give a crap about the human.

Or their wrinkles.

Or that they have no eye lashes or eye brows without the help of makeup.

Or that they still have a hair-do that was left over from being in a visor at 6:45am.

The bottom line, Miss Sara is allergic to ragweed.  So, she got a shot and a bottle of antihistamine bills and we all slept through the night.

Arguing with Myself

Yesterday started with a 4 mile run and a little over one mile with the girls.  Since I have allowed myself to take walk breaks, I noticed yesterday that I was talking myself into needing a break.

Luckily, I have my Garmin heart rate monitor to keep me honest.  At one point my brain was saying, “AhMahGah, I’m so tired. I can’t breath. I need a break.” When I looked at my heart rate, I was only at 173.  Ha! Not even up to my normal steady state pace rate (which is 176). So I started running again!

It’s amazing how much energy I suddenly had! Stupid brain.

This is where listening to music would come in handy.  I could spend less time arguing with myself and just get lost in a song. Unfortunately, I have only ran with music a few times and I get a little motion sickness.

After getting everyone moving around here, I headed to Pilates.  It felt so good while being super challenging.

After eating some lunch, we headed over to my sister’s new house.  I haven’t been over there since I helped her move and it looks so nice!  She is very crafty and DIY, so I got lots of good ideas. It was like walking through a real life Pinterest!

Meal #2: Two eggs and two slices of gluten free toast. I almost forgot to snap a picture.  Inhaled the other egg and toast before I remembered.

We wrapped up the day with watching Big Brother. Oooooh, it was a good one! I won’t ruin it in case you had to record it, but it was exciting!

Beer Mug Speaker

Yesterday got away from me and I ended up not blogging.  Probably because our internet was out for about 4 hours in the morning and I forget how to function or what my name is when we have no internet service.

How am I suppose to start my day when I can’t check Facebook to see what everyone else is doing?

To catch you up with my, always exciting, life:

Tuesday started by taking the girls to the groomer, running 3 miles and eating an egg sandwich.

For lunch, we headed to our favorite place for Taco Tuesday and then walked at the park.

Dinner was brown rice noodles with meat sauce and broccoli.

We always listen to my iTunes playlist in the car and were both wanting some new music.  Justin had mentioned wanting Kenny Rogers, The Gambler and some Neil Diamond song.  While finding those to load on my iPhone, we were watching a show that was talking about Johnny Cash’s last album.

That really sent us down memory lane of music that our parents and grandparents listened to as we grew up.

We ended up loading albums by Kenny Rogers, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash and Alabama.

Later in the evening, I headed downstairs and did some more cardio. I was going to do the spin bike for 30 minutes but OH-MY-FANNY! I couldn’t take it.  So I did the spin bike for 5 minutes, hopped on the elliptical for 20 minutes and then back on the spin bike for 5 minutes.

It really works!

I saw on Pinterest, or read in someone’s blog, about sticking your iPhone (or iPod) in a beer mug that has straight sides and it becomes a speaker.

It works!  I did that last night while cooking dinner.

Also Yesterday

I started the day by running four miles with a couple of walk breaks and then leashing the girls up for a 15 minute walk (we were pressed for time).

After getting everyone up and out of here for the day, I headed downstairs and lifted some weights.

Meal #3: Pork enchiladas from Ixtapa.  We met Justin’s Dad for lunch.  I only managed to eat one enchilada because of that peanut butter toast!

We ended our day by watching The Hunger Games.  I wasn’t real excited about seeing it, but it was pretty good.  Didn’t make me want to rush to my Nook and download it, but I’m sure I’ll watch the next one.
