Bloggers Unite

I am a daily reader of Healthy Tipping Point and today’s post, Lost and Found in the Garden, just has to be shared.

I was moved to tears and then driven to share this story.  Life is so precious.

I don’t even know Caitlin or her neighbor, Tonya, but, her story touched something deep inside me.  That feeling that anything can happen at anytime to anyone.

I am so thankful for my health.  I will NOT take my life for granted.

Hold this family in your hearts as they begin a very tough journey.

A Good Start

Whoa, yesterday’s food choices slowly went down hill.  I had such a good start and felt so good.  Then I started getting tired and old, bad habits came creeping back.

I started the day by running 5 miles (felt awesome!), walked the girls and then ate some plain Chobani yogurt (Holla, Tammy!)  to which I added some agave nectar and gluten free cereal. I ate that with a side of orange:

2011May 015

Next up was protein pancakes with natural peanut butter on all but one of them with a honey drizzle:

2011May 003

Justin left for the day to go play golf with his Dad.  I got busy trying to perfect my no-bake cookie recipe.

2011May 013

This time, I omitted the butter, only used 1 1/2 cups of oats, increased the almond milk to 1 cup and added 1/2 cup agave nectar (hopefully to keep myself out of the Nutella!).  They stayed softer than the cookies with the butter, but I also haven’t tried one since putting them in the fridge over night.  They may have set up better by now.  They are YUMMY.  I think next time, I’ll even use 1/4 cup of the agave nectar.  They are definitely sweet!  I used a smaller cookie scoop, so they are just a one bite cookie!

The rest of the day, my food went in the toilet!  Sorry you have to be a witness to this:

2011May 005

I felt myself going down hill around 3pm and looking for snack foods, so I grabbed a chicken breast and ate it with some Gates BBQ sauce.  That was my last good decision for the day.  Then this happened:

2011May 011

I never want pizza and wings again.  It was like eating a salt lick.  My body and taste buds were not ready for that hot mess!I hardly tasted anything but salt.

Ah, well, it happened.  Today is a new day!  I will definitely be working out today that’s for sure!  It’s raining, so I will be heading downstairs shortly to get some fasted cardio done.  I might even need to do TWO rounds of cardio today.  We’ll see how I feel.  I have to get this salt moving out of my system!

It’s so true what they say….the more sugar you eat, the more you crave!  I’ve had a little too much sugar lately and it’s starting to show through my food choices! (another reason why I love this blog, it makes me face the truth each morning!)

I’m off to take the girls to the groomer and then get some cardio done!  Also, on today’s agenda, start trying some new healthy recipes from fellow bloggers that I’ve been drooling over for the past four months!

Got My Body Back

Yikes! I’m posting super late today.  I got up at my normal early hour, drank coffee, ran, ate breakfast all while the rest of the house slept in.  As did the whole neighborhood.  It was so quiet out this morning.  It was great!

Let me back up to yesterday.  I ran my 5 miles and finally felt like I got my body back.  It took about a week to feel completely normal again.  After my run, I ate egg whites and grapefruit:

2011May 002

After getting everyone up and around for the day, I headed downstairs and lifted weights:

  • 3 sets:
    • Flat bench – 30 lb DB; 12 reps
    • One arm row – 30lb DB; 10 reps
    • Sumo Squat – 30lb DB: 12 reps
  • 3 sets:
    • Regular pushups – to failure
    • Pull Downs – 45lb: 12 reps
    • Alternating Lunges – 20lb DB: 10 reps each leg

My next meal was a protein shake. 1 cup almond milk, 1 scoop chocolate protein powder, 1/2 frozen banana, 1 cup frozen strawberries, a handful of spinach:

2011May 004

Just like my ice creams only I blended it longer so it didn’t require a spoon.

2011May 009

Then I was off to pick up a birthday present for my Step-Mom and groceries for our house and the BBQ we were going to yesterday.

I was super hungry by the time I got home.  I knew there would be tons of food at my Brother’s and lots of treats for me to graze on, so I kept it light:

Chobani Strawberry Yogurt with Gluten Free Peanut Butter Cereal

2011May 010

Then we loaded up our car and headed to my Brother’s.   All my blogging skills failed at some point between our house and arriving at my Brother’s house.  I didn’t take ONE picture!  I even brought BOTH of my camera’s!

There was lots of family and lots of food and LOTS OF DESSERTS!  I was in heaven!  I ate very little regular food, so I could eat more desserts!  It was so fun!

Hope everyone is enjoying the day off with family or just relaxing.  Justin is playing golf with his Dad today, so I am relaxing.  It looks like it’s going to be a great day to do some reading in the screened in porch!

Food to Go

I started my Saturday off with a bowl of oats with protein powder and a banana along with a couple of cups of coffee.

2011May 004

I needed to pack some food to go as I was headed down to watch the Black Belt pretest for the karate school I used to go to.  Just last year I was doing that same pretest.

Aaaahhh, memories. It was more fun (and less sweaty!) as a spectator!  I made some egg white and oat loaves:

2011May 042

I made them the same way I make the pancakes, only I poured the batter into a mini loaf pan and baked it at 350 until it looked done.  I also added a little vanilla extract. Sorry, I didn’t watch the time.  I think it was around 15 minutes.  There were three, but they looked so good, I ended up eating them before I left (and one before I could even take a picture)!  I smeared a little peanut butter on a couple of the bites, but they were good plain.

2011May 046

(by the way, I’m ready for the nails to be gone.  I’m over them.)

Since, I ate what I planned on taking with me, I made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to go and also grabbed the no bake cookies.  The pretest lasted about four hours, so I had plenty to get me through.  It was fun to see my karate family again and to cheer on all the black belt candidates!

When I got home, I ate my left over veggies and meat from our date night and cooked them up with some egg whites.  I also ate Justin’s 1/2 of a baked potato that he had left over.

2011May 2722011May 273

It all looks so ugly in the pictures, but it was yummy in my tummy!!

I was kind of fooded out for the rest of the day.  Never really felt hungry, just wanted to snack.  So, I made myself a protein ice cream, Yogurtini style!

2011May 275

In the bowl:

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • topped with graham crackers and chocolate/peanut butter chips

For my last meal, I did a smoothie (forgot to take a picture).

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 heaping spoon of natural peanut butter
  • topped with several almonds

So that was my Saturday!  Hope everyone is having a great looooong weekend!  We are headed to my brother and sister-in-law’s today for a BBQ and family fun!

Date DAY!

Last night was our schedule date night, but we decided to make it a date DAY!!

I started my day off with oats, protein and a banana:

2011May 031

My next meal was two brown rice cakes with PB&J and strawberry/banana Chobani yogurt with toasted oats and some brown rice cake pieces that fell off into the bag:

2011May 002

Then, we headed out to start our day at the golf range hitting some balls.

2011May 0062011May 008

About half way through my bucket, I got tired of it and then it started raining and then I got cold and whiney!

2011May 0162011May 0152011May 0172011May 018

And then Justin got tired of me it, so we left and ate PIZZA!

2011May 032

I have said before, I am not the biggest fan of pizza.  And while on my comp prep diet, anytime Justin wanted a cheat meal, I always liked it when he chose pizza because there was no temptation for me.  Pizza Shoppe pizza, though, is one pizza I like (and I choose to forget about my gluten and dairy issues).  I only really crave pizza once or twice a YEAR, and it’s always Pizza Shoppe that I crave!

I had the Big Salad with once slice of cheese pizza!

2011May 0302011May 031

Since we were on a date day, I thought it was appropriate to get dessert:

2011May 033

Seriously, Justin, coconut?

I got chocolate and no-sugar-added banana/strawberry, then topped it with cheesecake bites, skittles (bad decision, it felt like I was eating rocks) and cinnamon toast crunch cereal.

Don’t judge me for my new obsession with Yogurtini, I blame all of you fellow bloggers!  I didn’t even know these places existed until these little delicious cups starting popping up on everyone’s blogs (and a friend told me about it!). But the blogs are what sent me over the edge with wanting to try it!  Peer pressure!

We had work related things to do during the day too. Work Shmerk.  Finally, it was time for the night part of our date!

We put on our fancy clothes and headed to our favorite wine spot for a tasting.  We have become friends with most of the people that work there, so as soon as we walked in, they wanted to hear all about the competition!  Of course, I whipped out my phone and showed pictures and told them all about it!

2011May 037

We got caught up on their lives too, drank some wine and ate an appetizer (smoked salmon with an onion blossom sauce on top of a crostini).  So.Much.Fun.

2011May 038

Then we headed to our favorite restaurant.  Where, not so long ago, I had to just watch while Justin ate all the delicious food and I ordered mine with no oil or butter.  Not tonight!  I had a piece of the crunchy little bread with garlic oil, a spinach salad with goat cheese, the chicken and chorizo skewers with black beans and rice and CHURROS with ice cream for dessert!  Oh, and an order of Arepas for an appetizer.  I totally failed with taking pictures.  These are what I remembered to take:

2011May 0392011May 041

Nice job.

Of course, I shared with Justin and of course, my stomach would not let me eat all of my food.  But, it was fun being able to order like a regular person and I went home full and happy!

Today, I will be eating oats with protein and chicken with brussel sprouts and pounding water! I am so swollen!

Once a Day

Good Morning!  It’s Friday!  So, I was going to try to change up my blogging style and blog more than once a day, buuut I’m too lazy and don’t lead an exciting enough life!  Once a day it is.

I got wrapped up in Facebook and reading other blogs yesterday morning and before I knew it, I only had 30 minutes to get a run in. It still felt great!  My body is feeling looser and better each day.  I guess I didn’t realize I was so tight!

I started the day off with oats, protein powder and a banana.  (1/4 cup of 7-Grain Cereal, 1 scoop of protein powder and 1 whole banana)

2011May 003

Meal #2: Two organic brown rice cakes with natural peanut butter and homemade strawberry jelly (from my Grandma!), one container Chobani Honey yogurt with toasted 7-Grain Cereal (I toasted it a little too long so it was kind of burnt tasting, but I still ate it).

2011May 004

Meal #3: One cup boiled sweet potatoes, 5 oz baked chicken breast, veggie salad with Newman’s Own dressing.

2011May 009

Meal #4: Egg Sandwich (two slices Udi’s gluten free bread, two whole eggs and, dare I say it, MIRACLE WHIP!) Oh-so-yummy-right-inside-my-TUMMY!!

2011May 017

Meal #5:  5 oz baked chicken (Gates BBQ sauce for dippin’) and petite green beans tossed in olive oil and salt and roasted.

2011May 021

All the snacks may be out of the house but that doesn’t mean my sweet tooth went with it.  I really love having a little something sweet after I eat.  During prep, I solved that issue with a piece of sugar free gum. I am on a artificial sweetener detox right now! I don’t want to even look at something that has artificial sweetener in it.

*Side note: Gum with xylitol does not work well with everyone.  Justin gets ill when he chews Trident or the other gum I purchased from my doctor (when I thought xylitol was some fancy holistic doctor thing).  Very interesting.  It’s happened twice now..he gets really hot and sweaty (you can see the sweat), nauseous and super anxious.  Just FYI.

After my chicken breast and green beans I was wanting some ice cream.  If I hadn’t been too lazy to put on a bra, I would have gone to Yogurtini.  I tried making deals with Justin to get him to go for me, but he said he couldn’t because his calves were sunburned (we’re a lovely match)!  Instead, I made this:

2011May 024

I used our VitaMix and threw in:

  • 1 cup Almond Milk
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen strawberries (I didn’t actually measure, I just dumped some in!)
  • Handful of spinach

So thick and yummy, totally better than Yogurtini (I think my pants just caught on fire)!  But I got to remain braless and Justin didn’t have to leave the house with his sunburned calves and I still ate something sweet!!

No Sugar No Bake Cookies

So, yesterday I got busy trying to think of something to make that would be somewhat healthy but give me my “sweets” fix!  No bake cookies came to mind.  I took out my recipe card, given to me by my Grandma and started omitting ingredients.  After making these cookies, I hopped online and I am not the first person to do this…DARN! Winking smile

2011May 010_thumb[5]

1 stick butter

1 cup Almond Milk

1 cup Chocolate Protein Powder (3 scoops)

1/2 cup peanut butter

3 cups Oats (quick cooking)

I brought the butter and milk to a boil, killed the heat and added the other three ingredients and started mixing. It was a little too dry so I added a couple more splashes of almond milk.

I used a cookie scooper to place them on tin foil and then I flattened them with my fingers.

2011May 011_thumb[1]

(Next time, I will omit the butter and add some vanilla extract.  I saw this same recipe on www.livestrong.com and it didn’t contain butter, so I’m curious to see how those will turn out)

They were tasty just like this, but since they contain no sugar, I took it upon myself to add a little smear of Nutella!  I love them!

Here is the break down per cookie:

  • Calories: 123.5
  • Fat: 7.5g
  • Carb: 8.3g
  • Protein: 5.7g

Snacky Snackerson

For a brief second I was able to post comments yesterday, so I got one in.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t a response to any of the comments on my own blog. Sad smile  I’ll just do it here:

Brooke: Yes, I doubted myself in the beginning (and in the middle and definitely at the end!), but just keep plugging along and Trust the Process.  It works!  You can do it! In the end, when you are standing on stage, it will be one of the proudest moments of your life because you will remember how you conquered all that self doubt!

A Fine Balance: Glad I could help with the pancakes.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Amanda: Yes, I have been on this weight loss train for 2 years and did a strict comp prep plan for 16 weeks.  Girls who can do it in less start out leaner.  I started my comp prep around 30% body fat and ended at 17%.  A lot of girls START at 17%!!  That is my goal for next year! Winking smile

Just because:2011May 015

After my pancakes and workout yesterday, we got hit with a pretty big storm.  Tornado sirens and all!  My Grandparents home got flattened by a tornado when I was a kid.  Luckily, my older sister and I were with them visiting my Dad in Arkansas so everyone was safe.  That also means that my sister and I were with them when they drove home to it and I got to witness firsthand the devastation.  I will never forget that feeling nor the feeling of my knees knocking together.  Needless to say, I have some pretty strong feelings about tornados and when the sirens go off, I listen!  In fact, a friend of mine was trapped in Target when it all hit and she couldn’t tell what was going on outside.  They were just telling all the customers to stay put.  She called ME to get the scoop on the weather because she knew I would be on high alert and glued to my TV!!  She was right!!

After all the storm excitement passed, it was time to eat.  I ate the burger and brussel sprouts meal again so I could take a picture of it, and because it is so delicious!!

2011May 031

It’s actually one burger, but I sliced it in half, poured Gates BBQ sauce over it, and topped it with spinach and red onion with a side of roasted brussel sprouts.

My fourth meal was Nachos.  I think I am getting Nacho’d out, or at least my tummy is.  I didn’t feel so good after eating these.

2011May 001

I got pretty snacky and ended up eating a graham cracker with Nutella, a Snickers ice cream bar, some of Justin’s Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and some almonds throughout the afternoon/evening.  I finally realized, I was HUNGRY and ate some egg whites!  When I’m snacky, I just need to eat a meal. Treats are just so much more fun!!  I need to ditch the ice cream products because my body doesn’t like them, but the graham crackers with nutella is a keeper.  I can have just one cracker with about a tablespoon of Nutella and it’s a yummy little treat.

I received my slideshow from the photoshoot last Friday and I love them! I am so glad I decided to do that.  I will treasure those pictures and this moment in my life forever!  I highly recommend doing a full on photoshoot around your competition.  You won’t regret it!  Here is one of the pics:
